RACCOONS

Raccoons
(Procyon lotor)
Animals of the Procyonidae family share similar characteristics:
-
Relatively small in size.
-
Usually have slender bodies and long tails.
-
Many have banded tails, and distinct facial markings.
-
Most have non-retractable claws.
-
Mostly solitary animals.
The raccoon is a mammal, and part of the Procyonidae family.
-
A distinctive feature would be the raccoons dexterous front paws.
-
Raccoons are usually nocturnal, and though carnivorous, some raccoons tend to be omnivorous.

What To Look For:
-
Medium sized, with bulky bodies.
-
Raccoons have an area of black fur surrounding their eyes, much that looks like a 'bandit's mask'. This contrasts with the surrounding white fur on their faces.
-
Their slightly-rounded ears are also bordered with white fur.
-
Some other species in the procyonidae family have banded tails, which is a trait that raccoons share. Their tails alternate between black and white rings.
-
Their bodies share a brown and grey colouring, but can be darker.
